Santa Cruz de Mompox, declared a National Monument and a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is a cultural and historical jewel in the middle of the Magdalena River Delta. Mompox gained importance in
colonial times as a rearguard for Cartagena de Indias. As a river port, it served as a refuge for wealthy families fleeing from Cartagena in times of pirate attacks. Located in an arm of the
Magdalena River, it still connects with Cartagena via the Canal del Dique. Large quantities of gold and precious stones were stored here, which paved the way to an unbeatable filigree
craftmanship of gold that persists today. A change in the river channel shielded the city from the republican influence, and so it retained most of its important and interesting colonial past.
Large colonial houses, numerous churches, a cemetery of great value, squares, a lot of tradition and the nearby Ciénaga de Pijiño with its diversity of birds, make this place a real experience.
Day 1 We leave Cartagena to head south, crossing the Canal del Dique, and stop at the village San Jacinto, land of hammock weavers and multiple handicrafts. We continue to Mompox via Carmen
de Bolivar and Santa Ana to Talaiga Nueva, which lies on the Mompox Island. You arrive at Mompóx and check-in at the hotel of your choice. Around 03:00 p.m. we start a walking tour visiting all
places of interest, such as the churches of Santa Barbara, De la Concepcion, San Augustín, San Carlos Palace and Calle de la Albarrada.
Day 2 The morning is free for you to enjoy the magic of Santa Cruz de Mompox on your own. Alternatively we offer 3 optional activities (see list below). After lunch we begin our return to the
city of Cartagena or continue towards Santa Marta. On this last option we have the opportunity to stop in Aracataca, birthplace and inspiration for the Nobel Prize Winner in Literature, Gabriel
García Márquez, who gave this town the name Macondo in his novels.
