Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is the highest coastal mountain in the world. It owns the maximum heights in Colombia (5775 MAMSL), and its highest peaks are located just 39km direct line away from the beaches Caribbean Coast. Its varied geography is place for many different kinds of ecosystems ranging from the lustful tropical rainforest to the misty cloud forest, besides moors and the eternal glacier. This world’s tourist destination is home for a whole diversity of birds, butterflies, among other fauna species. Additionally, this paradise offers some of the most stunning landscapes with waterfalls and also mind-blowing viewpoints with direction to the Caribbean Sea, the Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta and the snow-covered peaks. El Dorado is a good example. This Nature Reserve is managed by a Colombian institution called Proaves and the American Bird Conservancy. Their main goal is protecting more than 400 bird species that live just in this area of Sierra Nevada. Located at 1900 meters of altitude, El Dorado counts with diverse trails that take you into the “High Andean Forest” and to some of the most spectacular viewpoints of Colombia. Among the snow peaks of the highest coastal mountain in the world and the Caribbean Sea ,a place to discover and to rest in.

Day 1: Leaving from Santa Marta at 8:30am with the vehicle to Minca (1 hour). A short walk around the town and a stop at a restaurant close to the Minca river to drink some natural juice or coffee. We continue the journey to the coffee farm La Victoria (30 min.). This farm is famous for producing one of the most delicious organic coffees in Colombia. This coffee farm located at 900 m. of altitude has one of the most efficient processing systems in the country. Micky Weber, German owner, could fix machines that date back from 1892, turning this place in an authentic living museum. His creative gears helped the farm to be self-sufficient in things like electricity and compost for the crops. Just to name a few. So everything they need is produced at La Victoria. In a two-hour approx. tour we know the ingenious processing of coffee “La Victoria 1892”, from harvest right to your cup. Then the journey continues to the El Dorado Nature Reserve (1,5 hours), which is around 1900m high. After spending some time there we have lunch and then go around the area, so you can appreciate the dazzling sunset above Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta and the Caribbean Sea.
Day 2: We wake up early to make a first stop at the viewpoint Gilles so that we can appreciate one of the most amazing dawns in the world. The snow peaks of Sierra Nevada, The Caribbean Sea and the Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta are part of the breathtaking sceneries. All in one place. Then we go back to El Dorado and have breakfast. There you can rest while a peaceful atmosphere surrounds you. Or if you like we can go for a walk through the spectacular Bromelias Path over the “Cuchilla de San Lorenzo” mountain cliff top. (↓↑ 600m, ↔8km, 3-4 hours, medium difficulty). After lunch we go down on a vehicle to start our way back to Santa Marta, making a stop to visit Don Camaritas, famous for preparing the best Chorizos and smoked fish in the region with his traditional oven. (3 hours, arrival around 7:00pm).
SMR09.1 - 1 NIGHT EXTENSION FOR 2N/3T TO GO LA CUMBRE NATURE RESERVE: We spend the second night at El Dorado Natural Reserve. On day 3 we have breakfast early in order to go on a 4WD vehicle to La Cumbre Nature Reserve. Here we start to walk down (↓ 450m, → 1,5km, 1,5 hours, Medium Difficulty) going along a small lake to reach a farm. After having a common farmer lunch we start the ascent (↑ 450m, → 1,5km, 1,5 hours, Medium-High Difficulty) to the vehicle to start our way back to Santa Marta (4 hours, arrival around 7:00pm). Included: Accommodation, transportation on private vehicles 4WD with A/C, juice on day 1, Chorizos on day 2, Spanish guide for 3 days with environmental interpretation, entrance fees to La Victoria farm.
